What do you need to go boating?

Boating licence

Smaller motorboats (usually up to a certain engine power) often don’t require a licence. For larger boats and most jet skis a valid licence is usually mandatory. This varies by country, destination and type of vessel – if in doubt, simply choose a boat with a skipper and no licence is needed.

Age

The minimum age to drive yourself is usually between 16 and 18, depending on the country and type of vessel. Younger children are often welcome as passengers or on a trip with a skipper.

ID & deposit

Always bring a valid ID (and your boating licence, if required). Most rental partners also ask for a deposit, which you get back in full after a trouble-free trip.

Insurance

Our rental partners operate insured boats and jet skis in line with local laws and regulations. The exact cover, the excess and the insurance conditions are part of the rental agreement you enter into directly with the rental partner when booking. Read more about liability in our General Terms (NL) (article 10), or ask our customer service.

Boating licence by type of vessel

  • Sloop or small motorboat: often available without a boating licence, as long as engine power and speed stay below the local limit.
  • Fast motorboat or RIB: a valid boating licence is usually required.
  • Jet ski: at most destinations a boating licence or a guided tour with an instructor, plus a minimum age.
  • Yacht or catamaran: usually includes a skipper, so you don't need a licence yourself.
