Renting a boat without a licence: your options

Jetski's bij een steiger in de lagune

No boating licence, but still keen to rent a boat or jet ski? No problem. There are several ways to get out on the water worry-free without a licence.

Choose a boat with a skipper

The easiest option: book a boat or jet ski with a skipper. An experienced local skipper does the sailing, while you and the rest of your group simply enjoy the ride. No licence needed.

Small motorboats without a licence

At many destinations, no licence is required for motorboats up to a certain engine power. This varies by country, so always check the specific requirements for your chosen boat when booking.

A note on jet skis

At most destinations a licence or minimum age requirement does apply to jet skis. Not sure? Choose a guided jet ski tour, or ask our customer service about options without a licence.

How does it work per country? A general overview

The rules for boating without a licence differ per country and change from time to time. The overview below gives a general picture for popular holiday countries. Use it as a guideline: exactly what applies to your boat is always stated by the rental partner.

  • Spain (including Ibiza, Mallorca and the Costa Brava): motorboats up to about 5 metres and 15 hp can usually be rented without a licence, mostly only during daylight and close to the coast. The rental company gives you a short briefing beforehand.
  • France (Côte d’Azur): the limit is lower here. Without a licence you can usually only take boats with a small engine of around 6 hp.
  • Italy (including the Amalfi Coast and Sardinia): with an engine up to about 40 hp you can often go without a licence, close to the coast.
  • Greece (including Zakynthos, Mykonos and Crete): for smaller motorboats up to about 30 hp, a licence is often not required.
  • Croatia (including Split): the rules are stricter and a licence is often required even for fairly small motorboats. A boat with a skipper is the easiest option here.
  • Outside Europe (for example the Caribbean, Dubai or Thailand): rules vary greatly per country and harbour. You will often go out with a skipper or on a guided trip.

Please note: this information is general and may change. Ghesia is not a rental company itself; the local rental partner decides and checks which documents you need.

What kind of boat do you get without a licence?

Boats you can drive without a licence are usually compact open motorboats for about 4 to 6 people. They are easy to handle and often have a sun canopy and a swim ladder. Don’t expect high speeds: these boats are made for cruising gently along the coast, anchoring in a beautiful bay and swimming. That is exactly what makes them ideal for families and beginners.

Out on the water without experience: how to do it safely

  • Ask for a clear explanation of the controls, the anchor and the route before you leave.
  • Check the weather forecast and especially the wind. If the wind blows offshore, you can drift away more easily than you think.
  • Make sure there are enough life jackets on board and that children always wear one.
  • Stay close to the coast and don’t go further than the rental company indicates.
  • Save the rental company’s phone number and keep your phone dry.
  • Skip the alcohol if you are driving; on the water the same rules apply as on the road.

Boat with a skipper: more freedom than you think

With a skipper on board you can rent a bigger boat and go further, to places you would never find yourself. The skipper knows the most beautiful bays, knows where to anchor safely and keeps an eye on the weather. All you have to do is enjoy. That also makes it the best choice for groups, boat parties and company outings on the water.
