Heading out on the water with a rented boat or jet ski for the first time? With these six tips you can enjoy your trip worry-free, from departure to return.
- Wear a life jacket. Even if you are a good swimmer: on a jet ski it is almost always mandatory, and on a boat it is the safest choice, especially for children.
- Check the weather and the waves beforehand. Our local rental partners are happy to advise you on the best times to go out.
- Always follow the rental company’s briefing. Before departure you’ll get an explanation of the boat or jet ski, the controls and the local boating rules.
- Stay within the designated zones. They are there for your safety and that of other swimmers and boaters.
- Bring plenty of water and sun protection. On the water the sun feels less intense, but UV radiation is actually stronger.
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol. Just like on the road: a clear head means a safe trip.
Before departure: how to prepare
- Read the briefing and terms in advance for the boat you book, so you know what to expect.
- Arrive on time at the departure point. That leaves time for the briefing and you won’t have to rush off.
- Check together with the rental company that everything is on board: life jackets for everyone, anchor, first-aid kit and a way to reach the rental company.
- Tell someone on shore which route you are taking and what time you expect to be back.
- Charge your phone and bring a waterproof pouch.
Wind, currents and waves: what to look out for
The weather on the water can change faster than on the beach. So don’t just look at sun and temperature, but above all at the wind. A strong offshore wind feels calm close to the coast, but can push you further out to sea than you want. Unsure about the weather? Ask the rental company: they know the local waters best and will tell you honestly if it’s better to wait.
In many places on the Mediterranean the morning is calmest and the wind picks up in the afternoon. Read more in the best time of year (and day) to go boating.
Extra tips for jet skis
- Keep a safe distance from swimmers, divers, other vessels and the shoreline.
- Make sure the kill cord (the safety lanyard on your wrist or life jacket) is always attached. If you fall off, the engine stops.
- Don’t make sharp turns at high speed, especially with a passenger on the back.
- Don’t ride in the wake of other boats, and look around carefully before you turn.
Boating with children
A boat trip is often the highlight of the holiday for children. Always have them wear a properly fitting life jacket, even if they swim well, and agree beforehand where they can and can’t sit while under way. Bring plenty of shade, water and snacks, and plan a swim stop in a quiet bay. With young children, choose a spacious, stable boat over a fast one.
What if something goes wrong?
Stay calm. If the engine fails or the situation doesn’t feel right, drop anchor if it’s safe to do so and call the rental company straight away. They know what to do and can send help. In an emergency, call the European emergency number 112. That’s why it’s important that your phone is charged and dry.

Can I go boating without experience?
Yes, with a small boat that doesn’t require a licence or a boat with a skipper. Read renting a boat without a licence for all the options.
